Small cars, big problems? It all comes down to maintenance, says TÜV SÜD

Even though the TÜV Report 2012 documents that the average rate of defects rose by a mere 0.2 per cent to 19.7 per cent throughout Germany, this rate still means that almost one in five cars fails to pass the TÜV roadworthiness inspection at the first attempt. In the category of compact cars typically chosen as second cars, the rate of defects rises particularly rapidly in the age category of five years and older. Are these cars of poorer quality? A glance at the figures shows that lack of servicing and maintenance combined with short-distance driving are mainly to blame for the high failure rate of compact cars in roadworthiness tests. Regular servicing would have a major impact at low cost. The 2012 TÜV Report will be available from TÜV SÜD service centres and retailers from 16 December.

TÜV SÜD mapped the wind resource potential in Hesse

On behalf of the State Ministry of the Environment of Hesse, TÜV SÜD developed a wind map for the German state of Hesse. The wind map offers a high level of accuracy which makes it an important tool for identifying wind priority areas. Given this, the map provides a reliable set of data for the targeted expansion of wind energy.

This map of the wind resource potential enabled the state government of Hesse to supply the regional associations with an important planning tool. Standardized state-wide wind mapping gives regional planning authorities a basis for decision-making to identify areas which are particularly suitable for future wind-farm projects. "Our wind map is prepared in accordance with the state of the art and with the help of a special modelling program which supplies informative results even in complex terrain", explains Peter Herbert Meier, Head of Wind Assessments at TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH. "The result is a comprehensive map of the wind resource potential across the German state of Hesse that can be used in compliance with the provisions of Germany's Renewable Energy Sources Act (Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz, EEG)."

Climate strategies for the industry, energy and public sectors
In spite of international carbon saving efforts, global carbon emissions are higher than ever before. In Germany too, further measures are needed. At E-world in Essen, TÜV SÜD presents its comprehensive portfolio of certification and testing services related to carbon footprint, carbon neutrality, biomethane and green power (hall 1 / stand 322).

"Businesses, energy suppliers and municipalities undertaking voluntary efforts to mitigate climate change benefit from cost savings and a good reputation", says Thomas Claßen, project manager for voluntary climate-change programmes at TÜV SÜD Industrie Service. "Another advantage is that they obtain hard benchmarking data for comparing their performance against that of competitors." Critical factors in this context are complete measurement and documentation of all carbon emissions caused by the company (Corporate Carbon Footprint) or the product (Product Carbon Footprint). Carbon footprint certification on the basis of approved standards (e.g. GHG Protocol; ISO 14064), carried out by TÜV SÜD's climate-change experts, verifies the greenhouse-gas balance has been drawn up correctly and demonstrates commitment to climate-change targets. Carbon footprint certification also marks an important step in making companies and products carbon neutral. TÜV SÜD's "Carbon Neutrality" certification mark guarantees that all relevant greenhouse gas emissions were taken into account and that the certificate holder has used all opportunities for cutting carbon emissions and taken appropriate measures to offset all inevitable greenhouse gas emissions. Offsetting options include investments in recognized climate-change project.
