Smart.grids.forum: Security of supply in focus

The automation of smart grids and their integration into existing networks are the two focal themes at the smart.grids.forum conference held by TÜV SÜD in Munich on 20 and 21 March 2012. The conference enables TÜV SÜD to offer grid operators and manufacturers of automation components a new forum and underlines its expertise in ensuring security of supply in the energy revolution – one of the issues of the future.

How can security of supply be ensured in the future? How can components for automation be integrated into the systems? How 'smart' must electricity grids be, and what about data protection? Smart grids are needed to help accommodate large fluctuations in wind and solar power, both forms of power for which use will increase dramatically over the coming years. For this purpose, the experts are compiling an enormous amount of information about the condition of the grid and the connected power generators and consumers. The details governing data transmission, for example, have been set forth in the IEC 61850 standard. The application of this communication standard in practice is one of the focal themes addressed at the smart.grids.forum, targeting grid managers of energy supply companies, the owners of renewable power stations, energy intensive industrial companies and the manufacturers of automation components.
