Correct tyre pressure has an array of benefits: higher safety, lower fuel consumption and thus lower carbon emissions, and reduced wear – on both tyres and chassis components. Drivers with a tyre pressure monitoring system in their vehicles have these benefits permanently at their fingertips. The systems will be mandatory in all new car models from November 2012. TÜV SÜD offers tips about ensuring correct tyre pressure at all times, even without the aid of this state-of-the-art technology.
The German Automobile Industry Association (VDA) warns that insufficient tyre pressure can cause fuel consumption to rise by up to ten per cent. In addition, up to 30 per cent of vehicles on the road – trucks and cars alike – generally have inadequate tyre pressure. Besides the higher pollution resulting from the additional consumption, a further attendant problem is the higher risk of accident through damage to the tyre structure, tyre overheating and more rapid wear of tyres and chassis.
