For a freshly developed product – are there any special requirements towards validation?

Not really. The method of sterilisation should have been considered early on in the design process because this can have a significant influence on the design process. Once the method has been selected, the validation can be conducted in accordance with the harmonised standards.

TÜV SÜD Product Service invests in Garching

TÜV SÜD continues to expand its activities at Garching. TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH is investing around 15 million euros in the construction of a new testing laboratory for consumer products, the foundation stone for which will be laid on 27 October 2010. In view of the global competition among testing laboratories, this is a clear commitment to Germany as a base for TÜV SÜD's testing operations. Only two weeks ago, Garching-based TÜV SÜD Batterie Testing GmbH opened a new laboratory for battery testing.

"The construction of our new product testing laboratory in Garching will further improve our capacities in consumer product testing", says Joachim Birnthaler, CEO of TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH, at the foundation stone ceremony.

You issue mod B certificate for 5 years. What is legal situation if testing standard or IMO Resolution materially changes within that 5 year window?

There is no simple answer to this as there are different organisations with different legal imperatives.

Ships commissioning Officers in particular may have obligations which could require equipment to meet standards or IMO resolutions which were not current at the time the MED TEC was issued.
Article 13 of the Directive gives member states the right where they view equipment may compromise the key aims of the directive to take measures against the products.
Clearly where a Standard (or test method) is considered flawed there is a case for enforcing re-test to a valid standard.

TÜV SÜD: Need for further efforts to improve bus and coach safety

Meticulous care and maintenance is still a priority need for bus and coach companies and drivers in order to improve safety levels in their vehicles. This conclusion was announced by TÜV SÜD today on the occasion of the publication of "Bus Report 2011" by the Association of Technical Inspection Agencies (VdTÜV) in Berlin. Although over half of the 50,000 roadworthiness tests which formed the basis of the report's evaluations showed no faults, the statistics on light systems, brakes and corrosion indicate that a need for action still remains. Wolfgang Eichler, Member of the Management Board of TÜV SÜD Auto Service GmbH, underlined that although buses and coaches perform significantly better than cars in vehicle inspections, with only 13.8 per cent showing major faults, their key role in passenger transport means that plentiful efforts must be made in collaboration with bus and coach operators to produce improvements.

Around 50,000 roadworthiness inspections of buses and coaches form the basis for the "Bus-Report", now published for the second time by Verband der TÜV e.V. (VdTÜV), the Association of German TÜV organizations. The 30-page report was presented at a press conference in Berlin this Wednesday. TÜV SÜD played a major role in producing the report and provided around 40 per cent of the underlying basic data.
