My company is looking to re-fit existing Rolling Stock but there is no EMC performance data for these trains. What will we therefore need to do to show compliance against the EMC Directive?

One of the first steps will be to find out if there is any history of the old rolling stock having any EMC issues, either effecting other equipment or being affected by other equipment. If there are no interference issues then this can be used as part of the technical argument within the technical documentation that needs to be produced. Prior to refitting the rolling stock, a baseline RF measurement should be made. This result can then be compared against a final RF measurement that is made once the re-fit has been completed. All equipment to be fitted will need to be assessed against the rail EMC requirements for emissions and immunity. Emissions testing will be covered by the in-situ measurements that are performed but as it is extremely difficult to perform any type of immunity testing on Rolling Stock special attention will need to be paid to this. This should also include an assessment on any cabinets in which the new equipment is housed. There are quite a few more requirements that would need to be covered for such a project. A full range of EMC documentation such as management, control and test plans would be required and these will detail the management and control of EMC in a lot more detail.
