How to freeze food safely

Fresh food such as meat, fruit and vegetables are perishable even if kept properly chilled in the fridge. Freezing is a practical alternative. Many frozen foods can be safely kept for 3 to 12 months – given this, stocking up on home-frozen supplies is a good solution and enables every taste to be catered to even when shops are shut.

Every tyre has its day

More and more drivers are tending to leave their winter tyres on their car throughout the hot summer months, for reasons of economy or convenience. A dangerous trend, as the Swiss special-interest magazine "auto-illustrierte" discovered when it commissioned a test comparing the performance of summer, winter and all-season tyres in summer temperatures. The magazine chose the tyre experts from TÜV SÜD as impartial partners for the tests, results of which will be published in the current August issue (publication date 22 July). The experts were clear in their conclusions: "When driven in the summer, winter tyres are a significant safety risk", warns Thomas Salzinger, head of TÜV SÜD's Tyre Team.

TÜV SÜD's experts have tips on how drivers can prevent problems and what a car's occupants should watch out for when temperatures climb.
