Strategy brings influential action which makes big differences- Introduction of new labs in Zhuanqiao

Looking back on the project of TÜV SÜD Shanghai new testing center

THE YEAR OF DRAGON COMES WITH RAISING HOPE. At the beginning of the New Year 2012, laboratories of Central Region, located at Waigaoqiao and Hengtong Road, Shanghai, are sequentially moving to the new testing center at Duhui Road, Minhang District.

Although it is always chilly and rainy in these months, our staffs of Shanghai branch are working together with suppliers and partners, trying every means to achieve the goals by overcoming each of the difficulties occurred in the relocation process. The newly-founded testing center, as the largest comprehensive inspection and testing base among TÜV SÜD Greater China, is just like a newly-built big ship which is ready to leave and sail the ocean.

When we look back, it’s not hard to find that the vigorous development of business has raised higher requirements of lab scale and testing strength. In addition, dispersion of labs may cause potential disadvantages from management perspective. More importantly, the department of product service has brought a new strategy prospectus to the table, which aims to upgrade the commercial testing services targeted at retailers of consumer products. The strategy means that only by kicking off broader services can we lock up the front-runner status in the industry.

Only the stronger party can survive from fierce competitions. Great strategies help the company to grow stronger. Either the competition or the transform needs quick action. In the June, 2011, management committee of central region decisively decided to revise the former planning of testing center, they determined to integrate the laboratory resources in Shanghai as soon as possible in terms of constructing a unified, comprehensive and large-scale new testing center which could better support and further promote the business of TÜV SÜD.

Well prepared into the open season – convertible tops need servicing too

When the first flowers appear, it's open season for convertibles. As genuine summer cars, most of them have spent the winter in a garage. Given this, 'topless' drivers should take some time to check their cars before heading out on their first trip. After all, a stuck roof or an empty battery can quickly put a damper on your spring driving pleasure. However, not only convertibles should be prepared for the new season – the process applies to all cars. Here is a checklist suggested by the TÜV SÜD experts.

Stevia – a tooth- and figure-friendly high-intensity sweetener

On 2nd December 2011, the EU approved stevia as food additive E960 throughout Europe. Within the legal limits, the sweet herb from Paraguay may now also be added to food. Nevertheless, TÜV SÜD's food expert Dr Andreas Daxenberger recommends that consumers read food labels thoroughly and look out for the percentage of the natural sweetener contained in food. However, stevia is only of limited use in easter baking.

The publication of Commission Regulation (EU) No. 1131/2011 marks the end of an EU approval process that has gone on for decades. In April 2010, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) presented an expert opinion declaring an acceptable daily intake (ADI) for the natural sweetener stevia at 4 mg per kg of body weight per day. According to this opinion, the acceptable daily intake of stevia would be roughly 270 mg for a woman with an average weight of 67 kg, and around 330 mg for a man with an average weight of 82 kg. "To date, scientific safety studies have not supplied any proof that stevia has any mutagenic, carcinogenic or teratogenic effects or affects fertility", explains Dr Daxenberger. The EU experts have also agreed on maximum amounts in food products. For example, the maximum permitted level of steviol glycosides is 100 mg/kg in fermented food products, 200 mg/kg in jams and 2,000-3,300 mg/kg in chewing gum.

Staying on top: TÜV SÜD tips on domestic ladders

Washing the curtains, dusting the collected works of Dickens on the top shelf, taking down ceiling lamps to remove dead insects – spring cleaning sometimes involves work at 'dizzy heights'. Good domestic ladders and scaffolding help spring-cleaners to avoid mishaps and injuries. TÜV SÜD's experts know what to look out for to make the right choice.
  • Do you actually need a full-length ladder, or will a small domestic three or four-tread stepladder be sufficient? Spring cleaners should ask themselves this question before they set out to make a purchase. For most activities small stepladders offer better stability and balance than long ladders. Plus, smaller models take up less space when not in use.
  • Spring-cleaners opting for a "full-length" ladder can choose between rungs or steps. TÜV SÜD's tip: steps offer far better balance and stability. This is particularly important for people who use their ladders only once or twice per year – for example, to change their energy-saving light bulbs or get their suitcases down from the top shelf.
