TÜV SÜD: How to make the most of car sharing

More and more people are deciding against buying or even leasing a car, but are still unwilling to do without their "own" vehicle. Car sharing is the answer. According to statistics from the German Car Sharing Association, every vehicle is shared by 39 users, and the model is particularly popular in major cities and their environs. But some people voice concerns that the vehicles may not be in good technical shape, or that they will be liable for damage even when caused by a different user. The experts at TÜV SÜD give the all-clear and have assembled a useful list of tips for the car sharing process.
In Germany, the name says it all. Companies like Stattauto or Stadtmobil are riding on the metropolitan boom of car sharing. The movement is less widespread in country areas, where public transport is often limited or lacking altogether and there is no shortage of parking spaces. According to the German Car Sharing Association, the majority of the 109 providers of this service are thus located in urban areas. At the start of 2012, over 220,000 drivers in Germany shared over 5,600 cars supplied by manufacturer-independent services. In addition, car-sharing companies operated by car manufacturers offered 1,500 vehicles shared by 42,000 customers. Car-sharers can use the Internet or, on request, even a smartphone, to locate the nearest of the 2,700 pick-up points in 309 cities and municipalities and check the cars available there.
