TÜV SÜD BABT extends Marine Equipment Directive scope

TÜV SÜD BABT, the certification body of the TÜV SÜD Group and a Notified Body under the European Marine Equipment Directive (96/98/EC) has extended the scope of the product categories for which it can provide certification under this directive.  The scope extension, authorised by the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), now includes product categories such as AIS-SARTs, Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm Systems (BNWAS) and Navigation Lights under COLREG72.

In addition, TÜV SÜD BABT is now a UK Nominated Body, approved to undertake Type Approval of equipment listed in Annex A.2 of the directive.  Annex A.2 relates to “Equipment for which no detailed test standards exist in international instruments”.  Equipment listed in Annex A.2 of the directive cannot be “Wheel marked” unless it is listed in Annex A.1 and National Type Approval must therefore be sought.
