TÜV SÜD: dual system of roadworthiness testing saves lives in Europe

In Germany, roadworthiness testing has contributed significantly to reducing the number of road fatalities. The number of deaths on German roads has dropped by more than 17,000 since 1970 to reach around 4,000 in 2011. This success story is based on a dual approach involving vehicle inspection by impartial motor vehicle inspectors and immediate repair of any faults detected by specialist repair shops. According to TÜV SÜD, this dual system is a reliable and customer-friendly solution for the whole of Europe. Its experts are therefore advocating the introduction of this solution in talks on the harmonisation of roadworthiness testing.
